Introduction: This Innovation Portal site has been developed as part of the charitable and educational activities of Project Lead The Way, Inc. (PLTW) to assist and support educational institutions in providing students with high quality, effective science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum and promoting STEM education. The Innovation Portal is used by students to build project portfolios and take advantage of opportunities such as scholarships and contests. Participation in the Innovation Portal is voluntary and not required. Access to information on the Innovation Portal is limited and is outlined in the Privacy Policy. Students MUST be at least 13 to use this site and students under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian consent to their registration.

Users of each part of the site must register and create secure passwords. PLTW requires users of the site to exercise discretion and respect in their use of the site and the content that is posted on the site.

Legally Binding Terms: This Agreement (including references and links to terms for the use of the PLTW Collaborative Portal which apply to use of the Innovation Portal also) sets forth the legally binding terms for your use of the PLTW website and the various portals and platforms on the website, including your rights, obligations and restrictions for the use of the services. By using the site, you agree to be bound by this Agreement and PLTW’s Privacy Policy as a “User” of the site. You are only authorized to use the services if you agree to abide by all applicable laws and to this Agreement. Please read this Agreement carefully and save it. If you do not agree with it, you should leave the PLTW website and discontinue use of it immediately.

PLTW may modify this Agreement or its policies from time to time, without prior notice, and such modification shall be effective upon posting on the PLTW website. You agree to be bound to any such changes when you use the services after any such modification is posted. It is therefore important that you review this Agreement and the policies regularly to ensure that you are updated as to any changes.

You may stop using the Innovation Portal website at any time, for any reason, by sending an e-mail to [email protected] indicating that you no longer want to be a registered user. PLTW may terminate your registration to use the site at any time, without warning. Even after your registration is terminated, this Agreement will remain in effect.

Eligibility: By using the Innovation Portal, you represent and warrant that you are a K-16 student, you are over the age of 13, and you have received permission from your parent or guardian to register on this site (if you are under 18 years old).

Children under 13 years old are not permitted access to this site. In addition, PLTW encourages parents of children 13 years and older to consider whether their child should be supervised during the child’s use of this site. PLTW requires Users of this site to comply with rules regarding the content posted on this site (See, Content Posted on this Site Below); however, PLTW cannot guarantee that its site will be entirely free of illegal, offensive, pornographic or otherwise inappropriate material, or that Users will not encounter inappropriate or illegal conduct from other Users. You can help us by reporting inappropriate material to us and we will promptly look into the matter.

Term. This Agreement shall remain in full force and effect while you use the Innovation Portal website.

Username and Password: When you sign up to become a registered User, you will specify a username and password. You are entirely responsible for maintaining the security and confidentiality of your password. (See Privacy Policy for additional information on security.) You agree not to use the username or password of another Member at any time or to disclose your password to any third party. You agree to notify PLTW immediately if you suspect any unauthorized use of your account or access to your password. You are solely responsible for any and all use of your account and to safeguard the confidentiality of your username and password.

Content Posted on This Site: PLTW assumes no responsibility for monitoring the site and postings for inappropriate content or conduct, although it reserves the right to do so, and makes no warranties, express or implied, as to the content, appropriateness, accuracy or reliability of the content or any material or information. Any opinions, advice, statements, information, content or other material posted by any third party do not reflect the opinions or positions or PLTW. The following is a partial list of content or material that is prohibited for posting on or through the Innovation Portal Platform. You may not post any material, content or information that:

  • patently offensive and promotes racism, bigotry, hatred, or physical harm of any kind against any group or individual;
  • harasses or advocates harassment of another person; exploits people in a sexual or violent manner;
  • contains pictures or personally identifiable information regarding a student (other than as required for teacher-student communications in the PLTW Collaborative Portal);
  • contains a photograph of another person that you have posted without that person's prior written consent/release, nudity, violence, mature or offensive subject matter or contains a link to an adult website;
  • furthers or promotes information that you know is false or misleading or furthers or promotes illegal activities or conduct that is abusive, threatening, obscene, defamatory or libelous; or that furthers or promotes an illegal or unauthorized copy of another person's work;
  • furthers or promotes violating someone's privacy or providing or creating computer viruses; or that furthers or promotes the use or solicitation of passwords or personal identifying information for commercial or unlawful purposes from other Users, or attempts to use or gain unauthorized access to another User’s information, or to data, servers, or other such information belonging to PLTW; or that attempts to impersonate another person; or
  • will in any way harm, interfere with, impair or impact the functioning and/or performance of the PLTW website, PLTW Collaborative Portal or PLTW Innovation Portal.
  • involves commercial activities and/or sales without our prior written consent such as spam, contests, sweepstakes, barter, advertising, or pyramid schemes.

Uploading and Downloading Materials to/from the Innovation Portal: The content, material and information (“Material”) on the Innovation Portal does not represent the official opinion, position or view of PLTW.

By posting Material on the Innovation Portal, you state and agree that: (a) you are the sole owner of the Material you submit, that no other party has any original, copyright or any other legal right to the Material which could impact or prevent its use on this site, and that the posting of any Material on this site will not infringe upon the intellectual property, privacy or any other legal rights of any other party; and (b) you agree to indemnify, defend and hold PLTW (and its directors, officers, employees, licensees and agents) harmless for any and all claims of any sort whatsoever that are made by another party relating to any Material you posted on this site.

No delay or failure by PLTW in exercising any right hereunder shall constitute a waiver of such right or any other rights hereunder. This Agreement and any documents expressly incorporated by reference constitute the entire agreement between PLTW and you pertaining to the subject matter hereof and supersedes all prior agreements, whether oral or written, and documents regarding your use of the site. New York law shall govern the terms of this Agreement.

Indemnification: You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless PLTW, its directors, officers, employees, agents, successors and assigns from and against all claims and expenses, including attorneys' fees, arising out of your use of this site.

Compliance with Applicable Law: You agree to comply with all applicable laws in your use of the PLTW Innovation Portal.

User Consent to Privacy Policy Any person accessing, browsing, or otherwise using the PLTW Collaborative Portal or the PLTW Innovation Portal, either manually or via an automated device or program, shall be considered a "User." All Users are bound by the terms of this privacy policy and PLTW’s Terms of Use Agreement. Users consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of personally identifiable user information and anonymous browsing information (collectively "information") to the extent not prohibited by law. If you do not consent to this policy, please do not access, browse, or use this site.

Registration Procedures and Information Provided

Collaborative Portal In order for teachers to use the PLTW Collaborative Portal, teachers will need to first complete the registration form and create a secure user name and password. During registration, you are required to give contact information, such as your name, school, email address and information regarding the PLTW courses you teach. This information will only be accessible to you, your school administration, your school district administration and PTLW. Teachers may also elect to create a user profile, which may be shared with other teachers and members of the PLTW community who are actively using the Collaborative Portal with the exception of middle school and high school students. In order for students to use the PLTW Collaborative Portal, their teacher will need to generate a registration code and confirm that students have parental consent to use school information technology assets and computer systems. Students will provide us with: student name, desired username, password. Students MUST be at least 13 to use this site and students under 18 should notify their parent or guardian that they are using this site. This information will only be accessible to the student, the student’s parents or guardian, your teacher and necessary school officials, and PLTW (as administrator of the site, to provide technical support, and in connection with the development, administration and validation of assessments, examinations and similar items, and the improvement of instruction under the PLTW Program). Please see “Security” below, for important tips on selecting a strong password.

Innovation Portal In order to use the PLTW Innovation Portal, students will need to first complete the registration form with a parent or guardian and create a secure user name and password. The information on the registration form includes the following: student name, email address, school name, address, grade level, and class type or project wthat you are using the Innovation Portal for. Students MUST be at least 13 to use this site and students under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian consent to their registration. Students may elect to participate in opportunities through the Innovation Portal, such as scholarships or awards. If a student participates in these opportunities, the student may also need to provide additional information relative to the opportunity, such as downloading work products, sharing course information, grades or other educational records or contact information, and this information will be shared with third parties as necessary to process the student’s participation. Please see “Security” below, for important tips on selecting a strong password.

Personal Information PLTW collects personal information in the registration processes described above or from Users who voluntarily provide such information in order to participate in numerous services and activities available free of charge on the site. For example, Users may elect to complete an online profile for enrollment in the PLTW Open Content Platform, to communicate with other Users via email and other mediums, or to take advantage of other services through the site. This list is not exhaustive as certain information is gathered automatically when you use the site and you may provide additional information voluntarily when using the site. Anonymous browsing information, aggregated data or other information which does not contain any personally identifiable information may be used by PLTW for quality assurance, improvement, marketing and other similar activities.

Disclosure of Information to Third Parties PLTW may share information that it collects or receives regarding its Users with third parties as required for the operation of the site, enforcement of the terms of use or privacy policy for the site, or as permitted by law. In most circumstances, information is shared only at the request of a User, to process a request for a User, or to provide a service to a User. If PLTW will share information with a third party, it will implement measures to have the third party keep this information secure and confidential. PLTW complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which prohibits the release of education records without student permission, and other applicable online privacy laws.

Cookies A cookie is a small text file that is stored on a user’s computer for record-keeping purposes. The PLTW website, and the portal and platforms on the website, use session ID cookies and persistent cookies. The session cookies are used to make it easier for you to navigate the site. A session ID cookie expires when you close your browser. A persistent cookie remains on your hard drive for an extended period. You may remove persistent cookies by following directions provided in your Internet browser’s “help” file.

A persistent cookie is set to store your User Name and Password, so you do not have to enter it more than once. Persistent cookies also enable the ability for the site to track and target the interests of a user in order to enhance the experience of the user on the site.

If you reject cookies, you may still use our site, but your ability to use some areas of our site, may be limited.

Profile - Information that is collected from PLTW teachers Collaborative Portal is stored in a “profile” of your preferences and activities. The contributions you make to the Open Content Platform and/or the PLTW online community may be used by the “profile” to serve the community and to enforce IP and use policies. All contributions you make to the Open Content community are linked to your user profile and login (screen name). If you have shared your profile, any User of the Open Content community may view your profile and the information stored there, except your password. All Users of the Open Content community will be able to see your published contributions, while the unpublished contributions are not available for general viewing. Even if you choose to keep your profile private, all Users may see your published contributions, and that your screen name is associated with a particular contribution. You can ‘opt-out’ of having your profile visible to visitors and other Users, by indicating your preference in your account settings, or choose which pages you would like to watch and what mailings to receive.

Linked Internet Websites This site may provide hyperlinks, which are highlighted words or pictures within a hypertext document, that, when clicked, take you to another place within the document, to another document altogether, or may take you to a third party website not controlled by PLTW. Any hyperlinked third party websites may collect, use, and disclose information in a manner different than the PLTW website. PLTW is not responsible for the collection, use, or disclosure of information collected through these websites and expressly disclaims any and all liability related to such collection, use, or disclosure.

Chat Rooms, Journals and WebLogs, Message Boards, Classifieds, and Public Forums These areas of the PLTW Collaborative Portal are only available to teachers. Please be aware that whenever you voluntarily post public information to journals, weblogs, message boards, classifieds, or any other public forum, then that information can be accessed by the public and can in turn be used by those people to send you unsolicited communications. You should use discretion in providing information in these areas. PLTW is not responsible for the review, collection, use, or disclosure of information collected through such public forums and expressly disclaims any and all liability related to such collection, use, or disclosure.

Correcting/Updating or Removing Information Users may modify or update any of their personal information at any time by logging into their account, clicking on their name in the upper right corner, and accessing features such as Edit Profile. In order to remove your personal information from the site, please contact the PLTW Administrator at [email protected].

Security This site has security measures to protect against the loss, misuse, and alteration of the information under our control. PLTW Open Content User accounts are secured by passwords and Users must keep their password confidential and logout when done using the site. PLTW takes precautions to ensure that User account information is kept private. We use reasonable measures to protect User information that is stored within our database, and we restrict access to User information to those representatives of PLTW who need access to perform their job functions. Unfortunately, no system is perfect; therefore, PLTW can make no representations or warranties with regard to the sufficiency of these security measures and cannot guarantee the security of User account information. Unauthorized entry or use, hardware or software failure, and other factors may compromise the security of User information at any time.

It is important that you keep your password secure and NEVER share it with anyone other than your parent or guardian. PLTW will never ask you for your password, so if you see an email that claims to be from PLTW and asks you for this, you should immediately report this. Your password should be at least 8 characters in length, and should use numbers and letters, at a minimum. You may want to include punctuation marks, mix capital and lower case letters and insert numbers in between some of the letters of a word or abbreviation you are using. DO NOT use commonly used words as a password, or reuse a password that you have used on another site.

PLTW does not share any information with third parties except as stated above, as required by law, as needed to protect the rights of others, or to enforce the terms of use for the site.

Amendments to Policy PLTW reserves the right to amend this policy periodically. Any amendments made to this policy will be considered effective immediately after the amended policy is posted on the site.
